Content marketing is a great way to build awareness of your brand and to drive traffic and sales to your site. Viral content — or content that gets a great number of likes and shares — can help you expand your reach exponentially, helping you to create greater awareness of your brand faster.

Writing viral content is easier said than done — otherwise, everyone would do it. However, there are a few common characteristics of viral content that we can learn from to write our own. Here are a few keys to viral content:

Provoke
Tell people who you think education is important, and you’ll inspire a few weak nods of agreement at best. Tell people who you think education is worthless and that the public school system should be abolished, and you’ll inspire heated comments either supporting or opposing you. Readers will share your content to defend or attack you. Few will simply nod or shrug and go about their business.

Taking a controversial position or finding another way to provoke your readers is a great way to get viral content and to get your readers engaged. The next time you write a post, consider how you can approach it from a more provocative angle.

Titillate
Another way to get your readers’ attention is to write titillating content. This is the content that is odd, unique, or compelling in some way. The content that just begs to be clicked — that readers can’t just pass over. You might see titles like “The One Product in Your Home that Could Kill You Right Now” or “The One Thing You Can Do to Save Your Marriage.” Of course, you also have to deliver on the promise of the title, or else readers will become annoyed at your gimmick and not come back to your site.

When you write this kind of content, not only do you pull readers in, but you encourage them to share your content with others, helping it to go viral.

Inspire
Take a look at your Facebook news feed. How many stories are there about disabled kids who did something amazing like win a competitive medal or start a charity? How many talk about homeless people who became business leaders or successful investors? These are the stories that people love to read and to share.

If you can find a way to inspire your readers with your content, you will encourage them to share your content and help it to go viral.

Engage
Take a look at that feed again: In addition to all those inspiring stories, you’re also likely to see plenty of stories about dogs who followed their owners to the ends of the earth, or soldiers who came home to their newborn babies, or couples who made it through 60 years of marriage despite the odds.

In addition to inspiring content, content that engages readers emotionally will encourage them to share and promote it on their own social networks, helping it to go viral. Consider how you can create content that your readers can connect with emotionally, and you will see your shares rise effortlessly.

Serve
When your readers are up in the middle of the night with a screaming baby, you can be sure that an article telling them how to get that screaming to stop will get their attention — and if it delivers on its promises, it’s an article they will share with all their friends who are dealing with the same problem.

Any time you can solve your readers problems, you can get their attention. Solve their most pressing problems, and you’ll earn their loyalty and create viral content.

Creating viral content is a great way to extend your reach to market your brand and connect with even more customers. These tips will help you create content that has the potential to go viral. Make them a part of your comprehensive marketing strategy, and you are sure to see results fast.
