“If you want to soar with the big birds, you have to find your piece of the sky.”
Sometimes I get asked by small businesses or entrepreneurs “How can I compete with large companies?”
My answer is never complicated and in fact always surprises the one who ask the question. My response usually goes like this, “the best way to compete with large companies is to do these three steps in order:
1. Narrow your niche.
2. Market to them aggressively.
3. Sell to them aggressively.
Again, “If you want to soar with the big birds, you have to find your piece of the sky.”
The secret to cultivating a niche is that the more time you spend in the trenches (commenting on blogs, speaking at events, writing for media outlets, creating informative content, etc.), the more expert you become, the more you expand your territory and the more people you can expose to your expertise.
